As a high school Physical Education teacher, Jess has always respected the importance of physical activity for a healthy and balanced life. Growing up as an athlete, Jess always had a sport to keep her active. But, while pursuing her degrees, work, academics and socializing all took a priority to her own fitness. Although feeling that she needed to find something to get in shape, Jess recalls that walking into a traditional gym left her feeling uninspired. Unsure of where to go, Jess decided to give CrossFit a try. After one class, she fell in love with the sport and never looked back.
It wasn’t long before Jess realized that her initial goals of wanting to lose weight and feel comfortable in her own skin, would take a backseat to her desire for a new PR or mastering a new skill. She quickly discovered that this drive would see her excel in the sport and with great success. Within her first year of competitive training with Undefeated, she qualified for a spot on the Regionals team, and the next year helped that team place first in Canada West.
Over the years, Jess has become an active advocate for CrossFit, and has brought her female fitness classes to Undefeated to introduce them to the sport. Jess shares, “It is amazing to bring my kids into Undefeated and watch them find success at something they may have thought was out of their abilities. I love that my girls want to learn how to squat and be strong and build muscles. I love it when they finish a workout and say ‘OMG, I thought I was going to die, but that was so good!” In addition, she has organized and implemented two large MPETA workshops that educate teachers from all over Manitoba how to bring CrossFit-style workouts into their own gym classes.
But not only has Jess had the opportunity to teach people about CrossFit movements, she has also gone beyond the physical and relishes in the intangibles that CrossFit offers. Jess speaks openly about CrossFit being responsible for a shift in her own ideals of beauty, body composition, and ability. Jess shared, “Since I was in high school, my perception of what is beautiful has definitely evolved. Curves are beautiful, thin is beautiful, and now muscles are beautiful too… My tree trunk legs that I once hated, have squatted 345lbs, and have become my favourite body part!”
Jess brings with her a ton of CrossFit competition experience, Degrees in Kinesiology and Education, along with an unparalleled energy. If you find yourself in one of her classes, be prepared to sweat! She feels privileged and honored to share her knowledge with the community that she refers to as her “second home”.
